The Centre for Telecommunications and Information Engineering

The Centre for Telecommunications and Information Engineering (CTIE) is recognised as a centre of excellence in telecommunications research, technical consulting and education.

It is an innovative group of highly proficient telecommunications engineers based at Monash University's Clayton campus.

The group carries out leading edge research, works collaboratively with and consults for key industry sectors, cultural institutions, organisations in health, the environment, and government, and provides professional training courses.

Faster optical communications coming down the line
Monash University researchers (Jean Armstrong and Arthur Lowery) have scooped the pool of prizes, including the $100,000 Peter Doherty Prize for Innovation, at the Commercialisation Expo 2006, for their work in faster optical communications.
They have developed an Optical OFDM system which can be used over fibres or wireless infrared light and high speeds.

As part of it's research and seminar series, CTIE hosted a Forum on AD HOC and SENSOR NETWORKS on the 16th June 2006.

Recently added facilities in Optical Communications and Applied Photonics Laboratory:
A 10x 16 Gb/s optically amplified long-haul transmission system has been donated by Siemens. Some details at Siemens TransXpress Infinity Multiwavelength Transport System.
Telstra has also made significant contirbutions with equipment and fibre.
IPv6 native network connections are making the news Computerworld.com.au article "Unis lead race to IPv6". Brett Pentland was interviewed for this article.

CTIE has been involved in the Australian government cooperative Research Centre effort since 1993, currently managing one of three programs at the Australian Telecommunications Cooperative Research Centre. It is also a partner of the Distributed Systems Technology Cooperative Research Centre.

CTIE maintains an extensive vendor independent telecommunications network testbed and video communications and encoding facilities for its research efforts.
